The River Risen – Mississippi River Flooding – Great River Road – Alton, Illinois

Last evening I evening I took a drive up the Great River Road (one of the great roads of America in my opinion) just north of Alton, curious to see how high the water was. It turns out that it was just several feet shy of the roadway. I suspect that it had already crested and was on its way down and the road may have been impassable only a little bit before. Even so, it was a strange feeling to have the wheels of my car almost parallel with the surface of the water. It almost looked like one was driving on the water. And I felt the power of the river like I have felt only a few times before. There were other pictures to be had along the water front, including a massive barge pulled up right against the side of the river by the road, but I left it too late to take my drive and the light was not sufficient, so these will have to suffice.

St. Francis de Sales Church – The Cathedral of South St. Louis

I have a great backlog of photos and do not feel very motivated to get them up, so perhaps this shot of a favorite subject taken on last Wednesday will prime the motivation.

Tower Grove Park Jonquils – Daffodils on a Late Spring Afternoon

The light in Tower Grove Park this evening was lovely, casting long shadows from the trees and backlighting the jonquils. Some of these shots are very similar to one another, but I just couldn’t decide between two slightly different compositions.

For Boston, Some Tulips – Beauty in Brokenness

Going to photograph this bed of tulips I had seen earlier in the day, I noticed that many of the delicate tulip blossoms had been battered by the rain — some were broken, others laid down, still others were cradled against one another. I could not help but draw an emotional correlation with some scenes from the tragic bombings in Boston just a day earlier. And yet the flowers, broken and beaten down though they were, were still imbued with beauty and dignity–infinitely more so the wounded and mourning in Boston. May God bless and keep you and all who mourn throughout the world.

of articles and blog breaks – on thrift store shopping and wholeness

Hello, readers/viewers. I don’t know what I ought to call you :) It has been a little while, but more on that in a little bit.
__________

First, I have had an article published in catapult magazine about a coat…well, really about other things, too, but finding an amazing coat in a thrift store gets the ball rolling.

In the current issue, which is all about the issues involved in clothing oneself, I also have two haiku, reprinted from here, about some of the wonders of spring.
__________

Regarding blogging and breaking, well, I am in the process of mulling over a photographic break, both on and off the blog–that is, exiling my cameras elsewhere for a time in order to…well, I am not certain to do what exactly, but perhaps, to riff off the images in the previous post, to let the lake refill. Indeed, the images in that post may serve as an apt image for this time.

I do hope that there will be some activity here, perhaps the posting of an article or two, but, more significantly, I hope to complete an overhaul of The Dassler Effect, with a new look and a section devoted to selling some of my prints.

I am not sure how long the break will last–it has not snowed here and the flowers are as yet to come out to tempt me–but I can be a fickle fellow :) so there maybe some hope that it will be short.

Thank you so much for coming along for the ride however long you have been on board.
