“today the air hangs” and “out from the breaking” – summer haiku
today the air hangs
dense as an asthmatic lung
waiting for cool breath
out from the breaking
clouds, rain-poured coolness; wet leaves
as green as eden
__________
I really rather wanted to continue the asthmatic metaphor into the second haiku, but could not manage it, and so changed it up, though I imagine Eden had no place for asthmatic lungs, as mine were a bit today. These days I am having a hard time imagining the many with worse asthma than mine and no insurance and/or no air conditioning. Thankful, and for the rain as well.
Oh, and PS, the photos will return one day…

she travels to me – summer haiku
she travels to me
in leaves; night queen of the east
breathes; iced jasmine tea
“this evening’s light pours” – Spring evening haiku
this evening’s light pours
viscous, strengthening into
summer’s honeyed mead
the faded grass lifts – Late summer rain haiku
the faded grass lifts
up its weary countenance
rain like a blessing

It is rather interesting that this haiku is written one year to the day after this one, as this morning felt very like that one. It was a good exercise to think of fresh metaphors. Pretty cool. No pun intended
“white parapets soar” & “through cloudy arches” – Cloud Haiku
white parapets soar
above slate grey foundations;
the clouds as castles
through cloudy arches,
spaces lit soft and slanted,
like light in courtyards
fall.winter.spring.summer – four haiku in watercolor
As Fall approaches, my thoughts turn toward haiku. Here is a watercolor piece I commissioned Joan Kluba of Paper Birds to do to illustrate four haiku I wrote to liken the seasons to the life of Christ and the church. Yeah, it is kind of abstract and high-concept, but it works in my head and I was very pleased with the watercolor as well. Click on the image for a larger version on my Flickr account.
