Artist’s Statement

I began to suspect about ten years ago upon painting a piece I later called, “Prophetic Self-Portrait,” that paintings, like dreams are conversations with self, God and with others. Sometimes the self talks back to the self (in a dream or in a painting); sometimes God talks to the self and then the self talks back to God (in a dream or in a painting); and, strangely, sometimes others are talking, crying, and calling out … for help (in a dream or in a painting). Sometimes I’ll have a dream and that dream will leave me with a feeling for the rest of the day.

I use whatever I have on hand and am very attracted to bright colors. I usually get lost in what I’m doing and am not very conscious of what I want to do from moment to moment. I enjoy losing myself in the process. It’s fun. Coloring outside the lines. Until I stand back, look at what I’ve painted and say “Whoops, that’s intense.” Driving outside the lines.

For me, painting is a dialectic between hope and despair, the possible and the impossible; the Here and the There. A prayer. It’s my hope that somewhere between the here and the there someone else is touched, helped, feels more connected and less isolated.
